Christmas red cabbage with apples
Fresh red cabbage is a must during the Advent season. This apple and red cabbage recipe is a tradition in our home and brings together the best of autumn and Christmas. The sweet apples and spicy red cabbage complement each other perfectly and, depending on your preference, it can be refined with cloves or cinnamon.

Directions
For the Christmas apple and red cabbage recipe, place the sliced red cabbage and apple pieces in a large pan. I recommend using a heavy, cast-iron pot that distributes the heat well.
Add water, sugar, balsamic vinegar, cloves, bay leaves and cinnamon stick. The mixture of sugar and balsamic vinegar makes the cabbage pleasantly sweet and sour at the same time.
Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat, partially cover the pan and simmer for an hour, stirring occasionally.
After an hour, add the butter and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for a further 30 minutes.
Finally, stir the apple red cabbage thoroughly and serve immediately. The apple red cabbage often tastes even better when reheated, which is why I like to prepare it the day before the party.
