Directions
Dissolve sugar in warm water in a large bowl. Sprinkle yeast over the top, and let stand for about 10 minutes, until foamy.
Stir the salt and oil into the yeast solution. Mix in 2 1/2 cups of the flour.
Knead on a floured surface until smooth. Add flour as needed (not exceeding 1/2 cup) to make the dough workable. The dough should be firm and smooth, not sticky.
Place the dough in an oiled bowl and turn it a few times to coat it with the oil. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm area until it has doubled in size, about 1 1/2 hours.
Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and form into loaves. Place the loaves into two greased 9x5 inch bread pans.
Cover the loaves with a damp cloth and allow them to rise again until they are nearly doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 355 degrees F (175 degrees C). Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
