How do you make candied ginger?

Candied ginger is one of my absolute favorite recipes. The result is a deliciously sweet and spicy snack that is also good for your digestion. It's completely homemade and tastes worlds better than the store-bought version. It's very easy to make, you just need a little patience and time.

Directions

1. Step

To make your own candied ginger, first peel the ginger. You can easily scrape off the peel with a teaspoon without wasting much of the ginger. Then cut the ginger into thin slices.

2. Step

Place the ginger in a medium saucepan, add the water and bring to the boil. Then leave the ginger to simmer on a low heat for about 30 minutes or until it is soft.

3. Step

Be careful when you pour off the water, it is very hot. But also try to keep some of the ginger broth, it can serve as a base for a delicious tea.

4. Step

Add the sugar to the pan and mix with the ginger. Allow the mixture to boil over a medium heat until the sugar forms a syrup. This can take around 20-30 minutes.

5. Step

Now place the ginger slices individually on a baking tray lined with baking paper and sprinkle them with the granulated sugar.

6. Step

Allow the candied ginger to cool and dry. This can take a few hours or even overnight. The longer the ginger dries, the crispier it becomes.

7. Step

You can eat your candied ginger on its own, use it in cakes and muffins or add it to tea or cocktails. Have fun trying it out!
