Directions

105 min.
1. Step

Preheat your oven to 355 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) - an important step that ensures your potatoes bake evenly.

2. Step

Next, peel and thinly slice your potatoes and onion. Personally, I use a mandoline slicer for this to ensure uniformity, but a sharp knife does the job just as well.

3. Step

With a mincer or press, crush the garlic - its juice should be well-released to impart the best flavor to the bake.

4. Step

In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced potatoes, onions, crushed garlic, cream, half of the cheese, salt, and pepper. Mix it well so every slice gets a coating of cream and cheese, this will result in a creamier bake.

5. Step

Grease your baking dish with butter, ensuring all sides are well-coated to prevent sticking. After years of baking, I would suggest using a deep dish to accommodate the creaminess without any overflow.

6. Step

Layer the potato mixture evenly into the baking dish, pressing the mixture down to make it compact.

7. Step

Sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top before putting it into the oven. The cheese forms a golden crust as the potatoes bake – a treat for all cheese-lovers out there!

8. Step

Bake for about 1 hour and 15 minutes, until the top is golden and the potatoes are soft. Use a fork to check if the potatoes are done - it should slide in easily without any resistance.

9. Step

Let it cool for a few minutes, garnish with fresh parsley before serving. The garnish not only adds color but a pop of fresh flavor as well.
