Homemade mulled wine

Mulled wine is an absolute must during the chilly Christmas season. With its warm and inviting aroma, it's the perfect drink to warm you up after a long day in the cold. I have made this recipe every year during the holidays and it has become a beloved ritual in our home. The balance of sweet and spicy combined with the warming effect of the wine is simply irresistible.

Directions

1. Step

To prepare the mulled wine, first wash the organic oranges and lemons well. Then cut one of the oranges and the lemon into slices. I have found that this gives the mulled wine an extra citrus note.

2. Step

In a large saucepan, add the sugar, cinnamon sticks, star anise and cloves. Add the slices of lemon and orange and pour the red wine over everything. Now heat everything over a medium heat for about 10 to 15 minutes. Be careful not to let the wine boil, otherwise the alcohol will evaporate.

3. Step

Stir occasionally to ensure that the sugar is completely dissolved and the flavors are well combined.

4. Step

Then squeeze the second orange and add the juice to the mulled wine. This gives the mulled wine a fresh and fruity note.

5. Step

Now leave the mulled wine to infuse on a low heat for a further 30 to 45 minutes.

6. Step

Before serving, add the optional amaretto or rum to the mulled wine and stir well. This gives the mulled wine an additional aroma and a little more warmth.
